On Saturday 20th August, local footballing legend Matt Le Tissier captivated the sell-out crowd of members and guests at Romsey Conservative Club, even welcoming them as they arrived much to their surprise!
There was an air of anticipation and excitement as everyone took their seats, waiting for the number 7 Saints legend and well-known face around Romsey to entertain them for the evening. They didn’t have to wait long as the man himself was led onto the stage and was greeted with rapturous applause.
After a quick introduction by Club Committee member and fan Nick Palmer, Matt gave an insight to his childhood and his journey to being signed by Southampton Football Club. He told numerous football-related stories and had the crowd laughing along and listing intently.
Following a 30 min break, Matt returned to the stage to answer questions from the crowd. A natural speaker, he answered them with style, grace and humour and then happily posed for pictures and signed autographs. He even bought tickets to win one of his own signed shirts which had been donated by the Club. £290 was raised for the Jenna Marie Foundation and was won by Club Member Mark Seymour.
Matt finished the evening with a quick game of snooker and left with everyone commenting on what a professional he was – both on and off the pitch – and what a fabulous speaker he was. Romsey Conservative Club were delighted with how the evening went and are planning more such evenings in the future.
Dave Maslen, Club Chairman commented, ‘A chance meeting with Matt Le Tissier at the Jubilee Celebrations in Romsey led to one of the most successful evenings we have had. Matt exceeded our expectations and we were also delighted to welcome our member Andy Cook here as a special guest of the Club’.
